Antoni Gaudí…a genius, a madman, an architect

Antoni Gaudí…a genius, a madman, and an architect. If you haven't heard of Antoni Gaudí, it is okay. I never heard of him until I was researching Barcelona, Spain. Antoni Gaudí was a Spanish Catalan architect and the most famous Catalan Modernism practitioner, who created exquisite buildings around Barcelona from the 1870's to the 1920's. He was an artist who had a vision, different from others of his time.  People were used to traditional style buildings and when Gaudí started building/decorating, his work did not line up with what others had done. His work is beautiful, intriguing, and creative.  Casa Battló is covered in an array of mosaic tiles that reflects the sunlight.  Gaudí is known for his use with mosaics; however, when he started designing buildings and structures like this, people thought he was a madman by ruining expensive tiles.

In 1882, La Sagrada Família (a Roman Catholic Church) was starting to be constructed. In 1883, Antoni Gaudí took over the project. Unlike his mosaic buildings, this church was designed in a Gothic style. Gaudí dedicated his life to the construction and design of La Sagrada Família and when he passed away in 1926, less than a quarter of the church was completed. With a few interruptions over the past 90 years, La Sagrada Família continues to be built according to Gaudí’s design. Although the church is incomplete, it is one of Barcelona’s tallest buildings, the most visited structure, and has been declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO. Expected completion of this masterpiece is 2026, a century after Gaudí’s death.

Antoni Gaudí was indeed a creative genius. He had such an array of visions and talent, it is no wonder that the City of Barcelona raves about his work. There are various Gaudí sites across Barcelona including Park Güell, Casa Mila, and Palacio Güell. If visiting Barcelona, his work is a definite must-see.
