Getting free flights all the time would make me the happiest (and probably luckiest) person ever. As much as I keep wishing for this to happen, it hasn’t happened quite yet. However, I do get at least one free flight a year, which is pretty good I think! If you don’t work in the airline industry, the key to getting free flights are travel rewards. Almost every bank offers a travel rewards credit card and if you use it for every purchase (no matter how big or small), the points add up quickly. Then before you know it, you are on your way to New York, taking in the sites and visiting Broadway.
So what’s a good card to get you started? Right now, I am using American Express Gold Card. Once you sign up, all you need to do is spend $500 in the first three months of having the card, and you obtain 25,000 points. Sign up for a free Aeroplan membership and you can transfer your American Express points over to Aeroplan for equal miles.
The 25,000 miles you get are enough to get you a round trip flight almost anywhere in continental North America. For some airlines, you will stay have to pay fuel surcharges or taxes; however Aeroplan has a number of partners you can book with that charge lower fuel surcharges or nothing. These include United Airlines and Air China, among others.
Is there an annual fee? Yes, BUT the fee is waived for the first year. From what I can see, you cancel the card anytime, so put a reminder in your calendar to cancel before the year is up if you choose not to keep the card. If you do choose to keep the card, the fee is $150 per year, but you get travel medical, travel insurance, among other great benefits. And if you are a frequent traveller like myself, you would normally spend more than $150 in travel insurance in a year, so this is a good deal!
