In the need for a weekend get-away with a good friend, we headed to the town of Squamish–just 60km from Vancouver. It’s a pretty great place to visit for outdoor junkies or if you just want a bit of a break from the city. Home to hiking, rock-climbing, mountain biking, and kayaking, this place is easily one of my favourite places to visit. So this is a start on how to spend a weekend in Squamish!
Be Social – Eats and Treats
Looking for a chill place to have a pint? Sit on the patio at Howe Sound Craft Brewery and try the Garibaldi Honey Pale Ale or a Rail Ale Nut Brown. Sit out in the sun and enjoy views of the Stawamus Chief.
Or if you’re in the mood for a healthy breakfast (like us on a Sunday morning), check out Zephyr Cafe. Best thing on the menu? The Breakfast Rice Bowl… local poached eggs on a bed of organic rice, spinach, and black bean mix. Topped with tomato, avocado, green onions, sprouts, salsa. This bowl is a pretty decent size, so it is easily sharable.
Get Active – Trails & Explorations
If you want epic views with minimal effort, take the Sea to Sky Gondola up to the top. Overlooking all of Squamish and Howe Sound, you can see forever it feels like. White-capped mountains, deep blue oceans, and rolling hills. Once at the top, you can walk the suspension bridge or take one of the many trails to various lookout points. The incline on the trails is pretty minimal, so it makes for an easy and enjoyable day.
Or if you want to burn the calories off from all your pints, hike up the Chief. There are three lookout points that require a bit of effort to get to. With lookouts off the path, waterfalls, and interesting trails (think ladders and chains to help you up), you will find yourself probably exhausted, but pretty excited about the views.
There is a ton of things to do and see in Squamish, but this will get you started. If you’re look for more places to explore, check out Best Places to Take a Hike Around Vancouver.
